Do press-on nails ruin your real nails? (the honest truth)

Press-on nails are convenient, gorgeous, and totally addictive. But here’s the truth: just like any nail enhancement, they come with a few caveats. And if you’re not careful, they can lead to damaged nails. The good news? It’s all preventable.

Don’t rip them off. Ever.

Ripping, picking or pulling off your press-on nails, especially when you’ve used liquid glue, can take layers of your natural nail with it. That glue bonds to your nail plate, and tearing them off means tearing your actual nail. Here's what they can look like:

Over time, improper removal can lead to thinning, brittleness, and breakage. To keep your natural nails healthy and strong, always soak off press-ons gently or use a proper removal method.

Go easy on your cuticles.

Cuticle prep is optional — and if you’re going to do it, be super gentle. Pushing too hard or snipping too much can lead to soreness or even tiny nicks that open the door to infection. Think of your cuticles like little bodyguards for your nails. Be kind to them.

No wet hands, please.

Moisture and glue do not mix. Applying press-ons to damp hands traps water underneath, which can create a cozy home for bacteria or fungus. Always start with clean, dry nails — wipe them with alcohol or a nail dehydrator — and try to avoid water for at least an hour after application so everything can bond properly.

Allergies are rare, but not impossible.

Most luxury press-ons are fully cured and safe for use. But reactions to glue or other materials can happen. If you have sensitive skin or have reacted to nail products before, it’s worth doing a patch test first. If anything feels off — itching, redness, swelling — take them off and check in with a professional.

See a doctor if you have a reaction to using nail enhancements and treatments.

Press-ons are amazing when used with care. Treat your nails gently, prep properly, and never, ever force them off. Your natural nails will thank you.
